KMyMoney is a Personal Accounting package. You can read about it at KMyMoney2.SourceForge.Net.
Think of it as an Open Source Quickbooks.
But it has a few major flaws!
The last item is not strictly true. in fact it does do GST but it's called VAT and its not really intuitive.
After MYOB dropped its Cashbook product and provided no alternative, I was left searching for a suitable package that was better than an excel spreadsheet.
I tried many packages, including quickbooks, gnucash and kmymoney. None of them did what I wanted and the paid alternatives quickbooks and others turned me off. I didnt want to find myself in the same position as I found myself with MYOB.
In the end I struggled by, I used excel and scrap bits of paper.
When tax time came I was left with a mess. I decided it was time to take the plunge. I wanted something that would import statements from my bank accounts. This would save me hours of time. The only one that came close was KMyMoney. but even it failed. It didnt calculate GST (VAT) when importing. that was a major pain as it meant importing hundreds of items and then editing each one to add the GST component. Not Good Enough!
Being open source I knew given enough effort I could fix the problem. I managed to speak to the developers who pointed me in the right direction. In a couple of hours I had added the tax calculation to the import feature. I was sold. This product is great and more importantly when its not great it can be fixed and made great.
